Success of the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest at the Vienna edition of the “Willem Vis” Moot Court Competition, the largest private law competition in the world

The team representing the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest, obtained remarkable results at the oral phase of the “Willem Vis” Moot Court Competition, which took place in Vienna, Austria during 12-17 April 2014. The team had already obtained spectacular results at the Hong Kong edition of the competition, which took place two weeks prior to the Vienna edition. In Vienna, the team advanced to the final elimination rounds of the competition, a result which had never before been achieved by a Romanian team participating in this prestigious competition. Cumulatively, in Hong Kong and Vienna, the team obtained distinctions on 5 out of the 8 categories of awards.

The “Willem Vis” International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition is the largest and most prestigious international private law competition in the world. It traditionally brings together representatives of the most prestigious universities worldwide. The competition is comprised of an annual Vienna version (at its 21st edition this year) and an annual Hong Kong version (at its 11th edition this year). In the Vienna version, 294 teams out of 66 countries participated this year.

During the general oral rounds in Vienna, the team met the following four teams: University of Nice (France), Sandra Day O’Connor Law School, State University Arizona (USA), University of Marburg (Germany) and City University London (United Kingdom). Based on the results obtained in the general oral rounds, the team advanced to the final elimination rounds, for which it obtained a distinction in the “Frédéric Eisemann” category for the best team at oral arguments, the most prestigious category of the competition. The first place in this category was ultimately won by Deakin University (Australia). In the oral rounds, the team representing the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Law was represented by the following students: Andreea Armanu, Șerban Dănescu, Crina Gealatu (main oral advocate), Mihaela Gheorghe, Mihaela Gherghe (main oral advocate) and Geanina Stîngaciu.

In addition, student Crina Gealatu obtained an individual honourable mention in the “Martin Domke” category for the best oral advocate, out of approximately 1000 students who argued during the competition. The first place in this category was attributed to a student from the University of San Diego (USA).

The team was coached by conf. univ. dr. Răzvan Dincă, av. drd. Raluca Papadima and av. drd. Vladimir Diaconiță.
